Day Seven - Trip Around the Island (Part I)
Today started with some spam musubis (aka spam sushi) for breakfast from the ABC Store below. Yum! Been missing these and they're still as greasy and good as I remembered. =) Wasn't in a particular rush to get anywhere so slept in a little later than previous days. After breakfast, we headed out west and then up the H2 towards the North Shore. Stopped by the Dole Plantation along the way and took a ride around their pineapple fields on their little train. Took a pass on their big hedge maze though. I still remember the soil here being so rusty red everywhere from the high iron content. After picking up some pineapple ice cream, we hit the road again. When we hit the North Shore area, we headed back eastward and eventually found our way to Turtle Beach (not to be confused with Turtle Bay), so called because apparently it's usually a popular place for turtles to come onto shore. Unfortunately there weren't any there this time of year, the North Shore waves being way the heck too high and fierce during the winter but the waves attracted a rather large surfing contingent so we settled down on the beach for awhile to just relax and watch the surfers. Those guys are nuts. I have trouble swimming even moderate distances in calm waters but these guys (and gals) think nothing of charging into high surf and paddling their way out to catch the waves. I'd probably drown before I even got halfway out there. No monster waves in this area today but still good enough for a good ride. Also had a good time watching a guy trying to get his new black puppy to wade into the water. Puppy wasn't having any of it and would just watch his owner from the safety of the sandy beach. Hung out till the early afternoon. Then we drove over to Kahuku to hit the shrimp trucks for lunch. First stop was Romy's Shrimp Shack where unfortunately we arrived a little too late and they didn't have their large unshelled shrimp anymore so we had to settle for really gigantic prawn. Still quite good although my personal opinion is don't get the sweet & spicy sauce, stick with the butter & garlic. Romy's has pretty decent facilities too. Their tables are located under a big tent so it's shaded and they provide sinks and soap to wash off with after the messy feast. Anyway, we weren't quite satiated yet so we drove a bit further eastwards till we found Giovanni's Shrimp Truck where we picked up a plate of their shrimp scampi. Very, very good too. Their facilities were a bit smaller than Romy's and they didn't have sinks available either but good food is good food. =) |
