It's mainly the lax laws re fuel-economy - whic haven't changed much in the last 20 years. While other advanced economies have improved their fuel efficiency, the USA went the other way! It's as inefficient as that other oil guzzler - China! The Economist had a nice juicy article on it in the last issue. =D Enjoy.

Just escaped from China last week. Gas prices have been allowed to rise significantly since I was there last fall. Still, they're kept artificially kept low, and have contributed to shortages, especially in the south. The stories of 2-hour queues at the pump -- though not every day -- and of rationing are true. We were forced to reschedule our day trip to Guangzhou, because we didn't know if we'd be able to fill up there for the return drive.
