Couch Potato - Asian edition: Otaku Love

I know Ben and company aren't into Asian dramas, but I found the first two episodes of Densha Otoko ("Train Man") hilarious.

It's about a geek who rescues a young woman from a belligerent drunk on the commuter train. It's love at first sight for him, but not knowing how to woo her, he turns to internet chat for advice. Eventually, he abandons his anime, games, model figures... his otaku-ness... for love. It's one of the most talked-about dramas of this summer season.

If nothing else, its portrayal of otaku during the first half-hour is worth the download.

Ben:

If you can tell me where to get it with subtitles, I'll be all over it. ;-p

kaige:

You can pull the raw AVI-encoded file from the Torrents section of D-Addicts.com and the subtitles file from Subtitles forum.

Ben:

Heh, well it's certainly not a sympathetic depiction. Hell even I'm slightly revolted. ;-)

Nice, she's reading Dan Brown's Angels & Demons when the main guy sees her for the first time on the train. =)

kaige:

Episode 3 and its sub file is out. Man, those guys are fast. So, far they're managed to get it encoded by the next day after it airs. And pretty good quality subs are out before the next episode.

I'm not sure sure how long I'll follow the show, though, or any other summer J-dramas. Slow Dance seems to be well-acted, but it's another chick drama with 30-something woman/younger guy. *yawn* The only other show I've dl'ed is Haruka 17, which is based on a manga.

BTW, the Pinafore, where the otaku hang out, is a real cosplay cafe. Although, like most of those places, they don't allow photos. I'm embarrased to say I know where it is.
