I depends if you find the service (TiVo) of value or if the hardware capabilities/hackabiliy (Replay) is more important to you.
How do you watch TV?
Disclaimer: I don't own a TV.

Well don't they both provide pretty much the same basic features (namely taping tv shows) but ReplayTV throws in a whole bunch of other functionality as well? And the ReplayTV units are like $200-300 more than the comparative (HD size-wise) Tivo unit.

My family has the TiVo at home and loves it. It's pretty straightforward to use. It does add a whole other remote control to try to figure out though. It really does pick shows that are fairly close to what my family's likes are. Granted, my parents mostly watch golf and Korean TV but for mainstream TV, it does a fairly good job.
